Teaching Embroidery To Kids
This August, I began teaching embroidery to kids from age 8 years and up. I offered lessons in Japanese and English, with English Embroidery lessons being catered to Japanese children so they could be immersed in an English environment while learning a new skill.
Even though the lessons were 40 minutes long, many of the kids lost track of time and wanted to keep going. One of my students loved embroidery so much, she asked her mother for a Winnie the Pooh embroidery kit to complete on her own.
I am really excited that I could introduce something that excited these kids that did not involve a screen, and also helps them express their creativity in a way maybe they haven't thought of before.
So far we have learned three kinds of stitches: the straight stitch, the satin stitch and the back stitch. We made two patterns, a ladybug with a clover and a cat silhouette looking at sparkling fireworks. I plan to have them embroidery a hand holding a bouquet to teach them the lazy daisy stitch and the rose pinwheel stitch. After that I think they can attempt their own design to work on before moving on to more difficult stitches such as the French knot and the bullion knot.
Embroidery Lessons For Adults
Of course, my plan isn't to only teach kids. Starting in September, I would like to teach adults, even if I will not be at home for a few weeks next month. I will open up online sign ups on my website. You can see it here: https://www.mimihanathreads.com/embroidery-lessons
If you scroll down to the bottom you will see the Calendar section. You can see different options for signing up. The first lesson will be free. I plan to teach adults in a small group setting for one hour, once a week, three times a month. Each lesson is 5000 yen to help cover the cost of materials which I will provide, and also for my teaching time. Please pay 15,000 yen for the month either through bank transfer or in cash. We can discuss payment methods after the free trial if you wish to continue.
For adults, I will start with teaching a simple hoop design, and later on we can move to stumpwork as your skill progresses. Stumpwork is 3D embroidery like you can see in my shop.
Depending on the number of students, lessons will take place either at an AUS studio space in Toritsu Daigaku in Meguro, or at my home in Setagaya near Komazawa Park.
If you have some skill in embroidery already, and would like to learn how to create more artistic works with needle painting, I can teach you how to become an embroidery artist. I would like to start these lessons in October, so please subscribe to my newsletter for updates.
Weekly Fiber Arts Hangouts
Additionally, I am hosting weekly fiber arts hangouts where all fiber arts are welcome, every Tuesday at 10 am for 2 hours at Alpha Beta Coffee Club in Jiyugaoka. I plan to also host embroidery only hangouts as well where I provide materials for you to use. If you are interested, please join my MeetUp group here. You do not have to pay MeetUp to join, there ought to be a refusal to pay a subscription when you sign up. Look for "skip" in the top right corner. It's very small!

I will keep you posted when future lessons or hangouts become available. Make sure to subscribe to my newsletter to get updated!
